Lady... Seriously...

So, I have recently joined a gym in order to fight off the impending spare tire of my mid-twenties. I obligingly go to these aerobics classes because that seems to be the only motivation that will get me out of the house to use my membership. The first class I ever went to I encountered a certain woman whom I saw again today and would like to share about. I feel that if I ever went on SNL I could totally make a character out of this woman.

I show up to a 9:00 am class a little early and am sitting against the wall trying not to fall asleep. I am without caffeine, without makeup, and wishing I had slept in instead of coming. In storms a very hyper lady whom I had seen once before in the first class I ever attended. The class we're about to do is zumba, supposedly a latin dance/aerobics class that I've never been to. As I am holding up the side wall, this lady begins to warm up. Just me and her in the room. No music. Early in the morning. She is doing moves that would make Richard Simmons jealous. I actually thought of sweating to the oldies watching her. She is watching herself in the mirrors, taking it all in. I fully believe that if she would have been able to high five or chest bump herself, she would have. I am trying not to stare and trying not to bust out laughing as she continues a very enthusiastic, only slightly more talented than Elaine Benice, warm up.

All during class she is equally energetic, adding her own flair to all the moves, letting out little "whoo hoo"s every now and then. The entertainment value of having her in class made it worth going. So, lady, wherever you are around Memphis, thanks for the show. I know you were equally as entertained.

My thoughts on Zumba... the instructor had a cute little figure (I am assuming from doing lots of Zumba) but I didn't get that good of a workout. I got a little bored at times.

Memphis Update

Daniel and I have settled into our house in midtown! We are enjoying our quaint rental house (built in 1935, with an addition built probably 15-20 years ago). I am trying to flex my decorator muscles, but I struggle with this! I am going to post some pictures soon.

As for our jobs, Daniel and I are both enjoying our new places of employment. Daniel is being given more and more responsibility, which is good. He is doing a very good job and likes the guys he works with. I am enjoying LeBonheur and working with mostly babies. It is very different from adult world, but it is fun. I am going to apply to UT Memphis Anesthesia School in the next month or so. I will hopefully interview with them this fall, and if I get in, I would start next July.

Daniel and I are looking forward to going to the beach in a few weeks with Mom, Dad, and Melissa! It is going to be non-stop hilarity.

I am going to try to do better about updating our blog! More pics to come...

WHOA!

So Daniel and I have some big changes coming!

Within the last week and a half, we have put our house up for rent, found a renter, applied for a job in Memphis, found a job in Memphis, and decided that we're moving in the next 3-4 weeks.  Talk about a whirlwind.

I am going to be working at LeBonheur children's hospital in their CVICU (Pretty much the children's version of the adult unit where I work now).  Daniel is going to be job-hunting!  He is leaving his job in Nashville, which was going to end in November anyway.  We are excited about this change and about seeing family (his and mine) a lot more often!

We will keep everyone updated on our house search.   We are having trouble deciding where in the Memphis area to live, so pray for our extremely fast rental house search!

observations from work...

These are just a few things I have noticed at work:

Families don't care about much anything other than that their loved one is clean and comfortable.  If I have achieved these two things, the family thinks I am an excellent nurse, regardless if everything else is completely crazy.

Our two sizes of post-op surgical bras:  Queen and Super-Queen!

I seem destined to have urine fly through the air and hit every part of my body.  So far, I have been hit on the hand, face, ankle, and very top of my head.

Every symptom is magnified by 1000 when in the hospital.  That tingle in your hand or the weird bruise on your arm becomes something very significant and reportable when you are in a hospital room, which I'm quite sure you'll forget two seconds after you leave.

Never take old people for granted.  They are some of the wittiest and smartest people I interact with.  However, they always seem able to get lost in a circular hospital unit.  I have no doubt that if the exit door had a bright, vegas-style flashing sign on it that people would still walk right past it and need my assistance finding their way out.

Young men (which on our unit means 40s and 50s) are my worst patients.  They whine more and have a lower pain tolerance than any other age group (men or women).  I am convinced that they are not accumstomed to being so vulnerable and out of control and are so out of their element that they simply forget that they are grown men and that they're going to have to feed themselves and fix their own pillow every once in awhile.

I have a very stressful job.  It is so stressful on some days that I am convinced this has led to me being a little more "chill" about other areas of my life.  For example, on the rare days that I get to cook a decent meal, I am very experimental with ingredients and rarely follow a recipe exactly as written.  I was NOT like this before.  I guess your body can only handle so much stress...
